What to Say When You Call Your Rep. or Senator
Even if you know your basic reasons for calling and requests, it may be hard to know exactly what to say when you call your congresspersons’ offices. We’ve broken it down into what the requests are for your representative, and for your senators, respectively, as well as a more in-depth request if your congresspersons are already “on our side,” if you will. These requests generally include asking them to author or cosponsor the legislation we’re asking for, or to be true leaders on these issues by urging their colleagues (other member of congress or MOCs) to do the same.
We hope that you’ll use this sample spiel before calling, but still make it your own, use your own words, and let your own passionate energy shine through to the other side of the phone. Try to keep your message clear and somewhat concise, and especially confident (which could be helped if you learn some of the details and facts behind your requests, and practice, practice, practice beforehand!).
